To this day I don’t know what these trees are: their tops glow in the most beautiful shades of red while the leaves are lush green. Is that autumn colouring (it was October)? Are these blossoms, or pseudanthia? In any case, I was delighted every time they appeared in the train window.

Do you also associate certain seasons with certain colours? In Europe, I prefer to photograph the fresh young green and the blossoms in spring, and autumn with its wonderful colours. On this trip in October, the subtropical climate gave me both worlds of colour. I just love the May green dress of this tree!

I have a conflicted relationship with man-made structures… So far, the most I have allowed into my image selections is a lane or a hint of train tracks. But I have always liked photographing them — the fences, the tracks and the grids of this world that can be seen from the train. I call the photographs motion studies, delight in the effects, and leave them out of the selection for my next exhibition. But not this time. This picture of the open foil tunnels with the plants growing in rows underneath simply touched me, and I am curious to see if you feel the same way.

Let me tell you a secret: I like maths — I already liked it at school, even more secretly at that time of course. ;-) So when the movement divides an agricultural landscape like this into patterns of rhombi and circles flowing into each other, not only the artist’s heart rejoices in me, but also the little geometry nerd in the back of my head… but: Shhh!

The lush green of summer and the bright red of autumn combined. Not only in one shot, no, even on one and the same tree, and then there is a whole forest of them! In the subtropical climate near Shanghai, the red colouring is most likely not autumn leaves, but that doesn’t matter at all. There are moments when the photographer’s heart simply bursts into jubilation.

I love night trains and consider them the ideal means of transport for longer journeys. (Unless you enjoy taking pictures out of the window for hours, in which case it’s better to travel during the day).
A special bonus is the possibility to capture the early morning mood right after waking up, like in this picture: Daybreak somewhere in the Zhejiang province.

If “recognising plants as they race past” were an Olympic discipline, then I would be… well, probably only in the regional league. But I know some of the track bed’s inhabitants inside out, and my reliable friend goldenrod is one of them. I was thrilled to see that this perennial is not only widespread across Europe, but can also be found in China — here, it is called 枝黄花属

My first impulse when a power line runs parallel to the train track? Put the camera away. But not on this trip. I had just under an hour between Shanghai and Hangzhou (and between two business meetings), and outside the window was China! And it was a good decision, because I captured this friendly little forest, which the “disturbance” in the picture doesn’t harm at all. On the contrary, the vertical trunks seem to enter into a dialogue with the horizontal parallels, which opens up a new level in the work.

The 160 km between Shanghai and Hangzhou can be crossed in less than an hour by high-speed train. And yet there is a multitude of wonderful motifs between the two cities, such as this heathland.

If you have already read some of the other texts in this series, then you know how much these red-and-green trees fascinate me. Here they mainly form the colourful background for the cone-shaped tree in the centre, which is so beautifully flanked by… even more exotic flora.
