My favourite place to work is the train. Not only because I prefer to travel by train, but also because I have the best conditions for taking photos there: large windows and sufficient freedom of movement. In comparison, the view from the passenger window of a car is very limited.

However, when I pass such a motif — nearly every day — I have to make an exception. I watched these poppies in the cornfield from the first open petal, and when the full splendour had blossomed and the light was right, I let myself be driven past the field. And I think it was worth it. While the foreground has turned into a completely graphic pattern, there are glimpses of rolling hills in the background, anchoring the subject in the landscape.

Such a title is created when a photographer is happy. It was the first word that crossed my mind when I looked closely at this picture — plus, I’ve already used up every combination of the words green and meadow as a title. ;-) Even though I can control many things myself, there is always a portion of luck involved. Like in this picture, where the fine circular lines of the fresh grass are perfectly framed by dark tree shadows.

Sometimes at group exhibitions, I am asked if I painted the pictures hanging there. Most people are surprised to hear that they are photographs; but I will never forget that one visitor: He simply refused to believe me. He pointed to this picture and stated with a tone of conviction, “But I see the brushstroke right there!”

The more oblique the light, the more exciting the patterns. This is not only true for the ambitious architectural photographer who wants to shoot a façade in a more interesting way, it also works for farmland. In this golden evening light, the field takes on an almost mystical quality. That’s what I love about my work: The very banal ingredients of the main line of the regional railway and harvested fields can become something very special in the right light. A field of gold.

“Kornkreis” (crop circle)

This work from my diploma thesis was the first to show circular lines so clearly. These circles are inexplicable and they keep appearing under mysterious circumstances… Hence the title, although strictly speaking it is not a cornfield, but a meadow with dandelions.

Today, 14 years later, at least the circumstances are no longer so mysterious. The circles are created when I photograph a structured surface from an elevated position (like a railway embankment) and with the right combination of speed, camera movement and shutter speed. So I know how to get the circles; but why they appear is still a mystery to me.

I simply enjoy their beauty.
